Downtown Detroit Markets Bring Local Retailers to Popular Parks

November 13, 2018

If you’ve ventured around downtown Detroit near Cadillac Square and Capitol Park, there’s no doubt that you’ve seen the modern, terrarium-style glass huts.

Every summer and fall, the huts are installed and filled with Metro Detroit-area retail vendors like Pewabic Pottery, Detroit is the New Black, Goldeluxe and David Vintage. They remain open for a total of about six months over the spring, summer, fall and winter.

As an extension of the huts, there’s also the 1441 Woodward Collective, which serves as the brick-and-mortar companion and brings nine unique retailers inside to create a one-of-a-kind shopping experience.

The shops offer gift options like home goods, décor, accessories, streetwear, skincare products, apparel, sweet treats and so many things in between. Rotating winter installations such as Cadillac Lodge and Capitol Inn offer food and beverage options, and a place to relax and kick back while enjoying games and conversations with friends. Rotating summer installations such as the Cadillac Square Beer Garden offer similar options.

As summer 2018 transitioned to fall and vendors closed up shop for the season, the Capitol Park huts were transformed into community workspaces. Each space was outfitted with unique décor and the public had access to work from the huts for several weeks until the new vendors were selected for the winter markets.

Each season the markets are open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights. The convenient location of each market allows visitors to peruse the shops before or after visiting another nearby event or restaurant.
